Aquadrome health referral scheme runner-up at National Fitness Awards

Basingstoke Aquadrome’s Health and Wellbeing schemes have just missed out on a major fitness prize with the announcement that it came runner up in the category, Best Rehabilitation Facility of the Year at the recent National Fitness Awards, held in Leicester.

The Aquadrome’s health and wellbeing scheme helps people ease back into fitness after an injury, be better prepared for surgery, and aid quicker recovery after time in hospital. The Aquadrome also offer NHS health checks, Cardiac Rehabilitation for those who have suffered a heart attack and drop-in fitness sessions to improve people’s mental health. The Basingstoke centre was only beaten on the night by Mansfield District Leisure Trust’s Healthy Life scheme, out of over 100 applicants.

Jimmy Miller, Contract Manager for the centre said:

“We would have loved to win, but coming runner-up in such a key social value category is still a real achievement for my team at the centre. The work we do around areas such as helping people recover quicker from operations or assisting those taking their first steps towards a healthy lifestyle saves the NHS and the country money, but just as importantly we see lives transformed via the expert advice and guidance received by our on-site health and fitness professionals.”

Cabinet Member for Borough Development and Improvement Cllr Rebecca Bean said:

“It is great news that Serco and Basingstoke and Deane Community Leisure Trust have been recognised for this important work.

“We are committed to ensuring that our residents are healthy and active and alongside our work, the programmes on offer at the Aquadrome provide residents with the important first steps to improving their own physical and mental health.

“Physical activity has many proven benefits such as improving physical and mental wellbeing and opportunities to socialise with people also taking part.”

The year’s National Fitness Awards were the 10th anniversary of this prestigious event, with the theme of the night being Winter Wonderland. Guests were treated to a spectacular acrobatics show, with dancers dressed as mythical beasts hanging from the ceiling, in a setting straight out of a fairytale. The awards are organised by Script Events in conjunction with leading fitness industry magazine Workout, with support from headline sponsor ServiceSport.

Basingstoke Aquadrome, Tadley Health & Fitness Centre and the Basingstoke Golf Centre are operated by the Basingstoke and Deane Community Leisure Trust (BDCLT) and its managing agent Serco Leisure, on behalf of Basingstoke and Deane District Council.

Aquadrome celebrates 93% success rate for exercise referral scheme

Basingstoke Aquadrome, the huge sporting complex on Worting Road, is celebrating the news that its Exercise Referral Scheme (ERS), whereby GPs and other health professionals signpost patients to fitness facilities to help with recovery or to improve health, has achieved a success rate just short of 100%.

Of the 45 people who completed ERS over the last 12 months, 42 (93%) are now members at the centre, exercising regularly, many reporting greatly improved levels of fitness. The associated costs to the NHS of inactivity are estimated at hundreds of millions of pounds each year, which shows the importance of schemes like the Aquadrome’s.

Teresa Dutton, one of the ERS’ many success stories explains how it helped her:

"Having struggled with a bad back for some years, in 2017 my doctor referred me to the Exercise Referral Scheme.

“Following a one-to-one session with Aaron (Aaron Boyd - Exercise Referral Lead at the Aquadrome), who listened closely to my problems and set me up with a tailored plan to get my strength and mobility back, I signed up for 3 months, but was still a little doubtful it would help very much as I really found day-to-day tasks challenging.

“At the end of my 3 months, however, my back was SO much better. Aaron was very caring and patient; if I forgot how to do something, he would always help. I signed up to a full gym membership, which I have just recently renewed for another year.

“My husband also joined just over a year ago, we try to get in 2 or 3 sessions a week, we both enjoy it and really feel the benefits of regular workouts.

“Aaron continues to keep an eye on both of us, and is always there to help with adjusting our routines and gym programmes to stay in line with our progress and our fitness goals.”

Coupled with the ERS, the Aquadrome recently became an NHS Health Check centre, with this ‘MOT for the body’ being available free for certain demographics. Part funded by Basingstoke and Deane Community Leisure Trust and Serco Leisure, the checks cover things like Body Mass Index measurements, a diabetes assessment, checks for good and bad cholesterol, as well as personal goal setting to encourage continual improvement.

Jimmy Miller, Contract Manager for the centre said:

“We’re very proud of the range of sessions and initiatives geared towards helping people of all ages get and stay healthy. The success of the Exercise Referral Scheme has been particularly pleasing, as it shows that with expert help people can start making positive changes to the way they live, and by living healthier lives savings to the NHS can be considerable.

“The introduction of NHS Health Checks at the centre has already proven popular, giving customers a convenient way to monitor how healthy they really are. We also offer pre-hab sessions. Pre-hab is a concept that’s had considerable media attention over the past few years. As the name suggests, it prepares people for surgery, as well as helping them to recover quicker once the operation has taken place. With people going into operations in a healthier state, and being able to leave hospital quicker than previously, this kind of preventative therapy is, again, helping the NHS carry on doing the amazing work it’s world famous for.”

Please contact the centre for more information on GP Referral, NHS Health Checks, or any of the activities running at the centre - 01256 361 130.

Award winning night for Basingstoke Aquadrome

Basingstoke Aquadrome, which is operated by the Basingstoke and Deane Community Leisure Trust (BDCLT), has come out top in a Sport England-backed national benchmarking scheme, beating off hundreds of other sports and leisure centres.

Sport England’s National Benchmarking Service (NBS) scheme allows local authorities to compare the performance of their sports and leisure centres with that of equivalent ones around the country. This year, awards were presented at the Quest & NBS Conference in Kenilworth, which took place in February.

Jimmy Miller, Contract Manager for BDCLT said:

“This is a tremendous achievement for the site and for the teams who work there. To come out top overall for the whole of England shows what a great bunch of people we have working across Basingstoke, both customer facing, and the crucial behind the scenes people who ensure our sites run like clockwork, providing customers with the quality, value leisure experience they’ve come to expect from a BDCLT-run facility. I couldn’t be prouder of my team.”

Not only did the Aquadrome come out top overall, it also scored highly for accessibility. The Basingstoke centre was one of just three top-scoring facilities to receive an award in the Access category at this year’s NBS event. Access Awards recognise centres that have been particularly successful at attracting users from a wide range of backgrounds, including those from the most at-need groups.

Hazel Tilbury Chair of the Trust said:

“I was delighted to hear news of these awards. As a Trust, our ethos is always quality, affordable leisure time for all, and we do everything we can to make our facilities as welcoming and accessible as possible for all sectors of the community.

“Well done to the teams on site for the hard work they put in all year round - they really deserve this important award.”

    Mike Hill, NBS director, said:

“The Basingstoke Aquadrome has demonstrated that it is one of the best performers in the country, based on our independent analysis and benchmarking. It has shown excellent performance can be achieved in tough financial times.”
