Basingstoke & Deane Community Leisure Trust are delighted to announce that Tadley Swimming Pool is set to become more environmentally sustainable, thanks to £150k of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Improvement Fund.
The grant will help to fund refurbishment of the changing facilities, with improvements to include the addition of a new accessible changing facility, LED lighting, water saving urinals, high efficiency toilets, hand basins and showers and the installation new cubicles and lockers. These initiatives will reduce energy expenditure, reduce the water consumption and provide a more comfortable and pleasant changing environment for the Pool’s many users each year. It will also contribute towards the Climate Change Strategy set out by Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council.
Cllr Robert Donnell, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said:
“The borough council is committed to encouraging and supporting residents, community groups and businesses to reduce their carbon emissions across the borough by 15% by 2017.
“This grant is a terrific result of partnership working to prepare and plan for the impacts of climate change and will also make Tadley Pool a more modern and pleasant local amenity for its many users.”
Tadley Swimming Pool is one of 23 projects across England to share in £7.3 million of Lottery investment from the latest round of funding, which focused on minimising the environmental impact of sports facilities by investing in sustainable projects with a clear local need.
Sport England Property Director, Charles Johnston, said: “We know people have a better experience of sport when they have good facilities in which to play. This investment will ensure the people of Basingstoke and Deane will be able to develop a sporting habit for life in a first-class, environmentally friendly sports facility”
Attendance to both Tadley Swimming Pool and Basingstoke Aquadrome is up year on year, and Basingstoke and Deane Community Leisure Trust have reported a 3% increase in customers at Basingstoke Aquadrome and Tadley Swimming Pool in the New Year compared to 2013. The number of new members joining Basingstoke Aquadrome in January 2014 reached a record high, and combined footfall to both sites now exceeds 1.1 million visitors annually.
Both leisure sites offer a variety of pay-as-you-go options for swimming and workout classes, as well as membership types to suit a broad range of customers, including those on low incomes
Hazel Tilbury, Chair for the Basingstoke & Deane Community Leisure Trust said:
“Over the last three years, we have seen a steady increase in the number of visitors coming through the doors of our leisure facilities. We think this is partly due to wider economic recovery, but also due to the decision of local residents to spend their money on their health at good value for money, affordable leisure facilities. We assist by offering a variety of tailored workout classes, gym equipment and swim sessions to suit all ages and abilities, including disabled visitors. The funding received by Sport England for Tadley Swimming Pool is just one example of our commitment to continuously improving the facilities and services we offer to our customers.”
